Manueline details of the Belém Tower

A masterpiece of Manueline art

Built between 1514 and 1519 during the reign of Manuel I by architect Francisco de Arruda, the tower defended the entrance to the port of Lisbon. It was also from here that the caravels of Portuguese explorers set sail for Africa, India, and Brazil.

Its newly restored white limestone is carved like lace: sculpted ropes, crosses of the Order of Christ, armillary spheres, and even a rhinoceros, the first stone representation of this animal in European art.
